“Hope is an orientation of the spirit, an orientation of the heart. Hope is an ability to work for something because it is good, not just because it stands a chance to succeed. It is hope that gives us the strength to live and continually to try new things, even in conditions that seem as hopeless as ours do, here and now” - Vaclav Havel
Golden Bridges School was founded 7 years ago on the basis of this hope. We imagined a school that would serve the children of San Francisco through an education steeped in storytelling, music, drawing, painting, handwork, woodwork, land stewardship, an exploration of nature and equitable social engagement. The seed was planted. As we grew we travelled down many roads, operated under many roofs, at the farm and in many of San Francisco’s vast parks. We began with a preschool of 14 and have grown into a full elementary school with nearly 100 students.
Just over a month ago, the imagination that was sparked those 7 years ago was in full blossom. Now, just as we are about to move into our next long-term location and just as we are about to launch our upper grades program, through a deep need to care for the other, we are drawn to sequester in our homes. Our teachers have needed to quickly and profoundly reimagine their curriculum and their very way of being with the students. From the start, It has always been central to our identity that we are a school that celebrates our social bonds, our responsibilities to each other, and the cultivation of a deeply felt community. Now, out of the requirements of social distancing, our school community is dispersed and we are called to once again creatively reimagine what it means to build and maintain community. The pangs of isolation reverberate through us all. And yet, hope tells us that this time that we are apart is in service of the health of the whole. Hope tells us this time apart is temporary. Let us invest in hope. Let us pool our financial resources, as much as we can, so that we can be prepared for the day when we can be together again. Hope tells us that this is possible. Hope tells us that as it was the seed from which GBS was born, so it will nurture us in this time of lying fallow, so that the community sprout once more in new soil.
The education offered at Golden Bridges is needed more than ever. The education we offer develops each child's innate and varied capacities, builds resilience, a sense of social responsibility, and a love and understanding of the natural world.
Due to the shelter-in-place orders in San Francisco to reduce the harm of COVID-19, we cancelled our annual spring Plant a Party auction event. Because of this cancellation, we have lost $100,000 of crucial revenue.
We are committed to cultivating community, now more than ever. Without a physical Plant a Party gathering, we invite you to participate in supporting our community here. Your gift, large or small, will enable us to continue offering this unique and needed education to families, in-person or in-distance, regardless of their ability to pay. As of 2020 we have never had to turn away any child because of limited family resources. This is remarkable. We are committed to carrying this forward. With your support, we will.
