Since early March, BGCSF’s main priority has been to do everything we can to sustain programming and strong connections to our members and their families … while keeping our staff safe. We have worked closely throughout the past two months with San Francisco’s Department of Children, Youth, and their Families and the SF Department of Public Health. All of our Clubhouses remained open for full operations through Friday, March 13th. After the shelter-in-place mandate was announced on Monday, March 16th, BGCSF was deemed a critical service by the city. We kept seven of our eight traditional Clubhouses open. We were forced to close our four School-Based Clubs and chose to close our Tenderloin Clubhouse (due to specific Tenderloin challenges). We later reduced to five sites and, ultimately, to four locations -- with three of those in District 10 (Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, Sunnydale). Our Columbia Park Clubhouse, on the Mission Dolores side of the Mission, is open 13 hours per day to meet the needs of hospital workers, other emergency-services workers, and essential City workers. We are closely following the guidelines laid out in the Public Health Order for child care/youth service.
As soon as the shelter-in-place order was issued, we knew that we needed to develop online options to reach the majority of our Club members. We began connecting with youth immediately, while building out our “Virtual Clubhouses”. Our Virtual Clubhouses consist of multiple components including self or parent-led activities, downloadable PDFs, premade activity kits, accessible media, and most importantly, live virtual interaction. Our Education Directors, High School Services Directors, Middle School Directors, Athletic Directors, and Art Directors are all active in the Google Classroom engaging youth of all ages, but currently skewing more toward middle and high schoolers. Our Behavioral Health Services team remains active, supporting youth through phone appointments, video chats, and in-person services.
Through our in-person programming and virtual outreach across the city, we have reached 1,205 unique youth, averaging 575 youth served on per week. We are now distributing over 3,500 meals/week with efforts in Visitacion Valley, Excelsior, Western Addition, Sunnydale, and Hunters Point. We are supporting SFUSD with homework packet distribution, technology distribution, and food distribution. We are supporting teachers by ensuring many of our Club members log in to their classes online and get the support they need to succeed in their virtual learning. We are supporting families by ensuring they understand how to operate new technology and virtual learning platforms that are critical to their children’s success.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” says James Holley, Columbia Park Clubhouse Director and 17-year BGCSF veteran. Now into the seventh week since the shelter-in-place order came into effect in the Bay Area, our Columbia Park Clubhouse on the Mission-Dolores side of the Mission District has kept its doors open every weekday to serve the community as an essential service. BGCSF is launching a $3M fundraising drive to sustain our organization through September 30th, the end of our fiscal year. To lead the effort, our Board of Governors and Board of Trustees are contributing $1M toward our $3M goal. The Rise to the Challenge | Emerge Strong Campaign seeks to raise all the critical funds needed to replace the Club’s three remaining events for this fiscal year -- the Gala, golf tournament, and poker tournament -- and other smaller fundraising campaigns.
Over the past year, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco has served more than 19,000 youth and nearly 1,900 each day and we expect those numbers to return as we emerge from this crisis. Our contribution to kids and families in San Francisco never waivers, and in trying times like these our contribution as an anchor institution with trust and deep relationships in our neighborhoods is more important than ever. And, when we emerge from this health crisis and face the social and economic challenges that await us, the Club will, again, be there, standing shoulder to shoulder with youth, families and neighborhoods.
